About

Around twenty years in technology across three distinct chapters: semiconductor & electronics manufacturing; international industry standards in semiconductor, PV & Smart Cities; and digital transformation leadership.

until 2007

Semiconductor engineering

I began as a semiconductor and electronics engineer — silicon product and test development at Intel, embedded systems and automation at STMicroelectronics, and earlier work in test-equipment design and R&D. That chapter gave me two patents and a grounding in systems that either work or demonstrably do not.

  • Earlier engineering roles

STMicroelectronics, Dedicated Micros, Dionica, Carlo Gavazzi

Test-equipment design and build, embedded systems, SMT process engineering and R&D.

  • Product and Test Engineer

    Intel, 2005–2007

Silicon new-product introduction and test development on the Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

2007–2020

International standards

I then spent eleven years at BSI, the UK’s national standards body, where I moved from standards programme management into smart cities and emerging technology, and finally into consulting as the organisation’s first Consulting Manager, helping build a new practice. Much of that work was international: government, cities and industry across the UK, US, India, Indonesia and Europe. It taught me that making heterogeneous systems interoperate is usually a governance problem wearing a technical costume.

  • Technology and Standards Manager, Semiconductor & Photovoltaics

    SEMI Europe, 2007–2009

Semiconductor and photovoltaics standards strategy and programmes across an international member ecosystem.

  • Consulting Manager, and Project Manager — Smart Cities, IoT & Emerging Technology

    BSI Group, 2009–2020

Standards strategy, smart-city and IoT innovation programmes, and digital-transformation consulting across government, cities and industry internationally.

2021–present

Delivery leadership

More recently I have worked in hands-on delivery leadership — cloud migration and regulated platform delivery at Light & Wonder, and enterprise software and data programmes for electricity-grid utilities at GE Vernova.

  • Senior Project Manager, Urban Systems

    Swarco (formerly Dynniq), 2021

Cloud, hardware and software delivery for local-government clients.

  • Advanced Technical Project Manager, Technical Operations

Light & Wonder (SG Digital / OpenBet), 2021–2022

Cloud migration, data migration and regulated platform delivery for international operators.

  • Technical Delivery Manager

GE Vernova (Grid Software / Smallworld), 2023–present

GIS asset-management software and data platforms for electricity-grid utilities.

What connects the three chapters is a consistent interest: taking something complex, ambiguous and multi-stakeholder, and turning it into something delivered, adopted and durable.

What I do

Delivery leadership.

End-to-end delivery of enterprise software, cloud and data programmes — scope, milestones, dependencies, risk, governance and phased go-live. Comfortable as the primary point of contact for customers and as the person who holds delivery partners to their commitments.

Delivery frameworks and standards of practice.

I build the machinery teams run on, not just individual projects. I have designed delivery frameworks and best-practice standards adopted across functions, and I care more about raising the standard of a team than about being the only person who can run something well.

Standards, data and interoperability.

Smart cities and IoT standards development, including contributions to PAS 181, PAS 182 / ISO 30182 and related work — making data from many different source systems usable together through common models and APIs.

Innovation and emerging technology.

Taking ideas from concept through proof of concept and pilot to adopted solution, including AI and generative AI, IoT and automation. I am a delivery lead who is fluent in these technologies rather than an engineer who builds them, and I think that distinction is an honest and useful one.

Selected achievements

  • Designed a delivery framework and best-practice standards adopted by 20 project managers across a delivery function, raising consistency and rigour across implementations.
  • Led an AWS Landing Zone and cloud migration from proof of concept through to scaled implementation across seven workstreams — reducing infrastructure cost by 40% and cutting deployment from days to minutes.
  • Delivered a portfolio of eight concurrent projects worth $6M for international operators in a regulated sector, including a complex production-system migration coordinating 15+ third-party integrations, for which I received a CEO commendation.Light & Wonder
  • Delivered a $350k platform migration 12% under budget, with a clean, reconciled cutover.Light & Wonder
  • Currently lead a $2.2M enterprise software and data programme for a major electricity-grid utility, spanning MVP, greenfield and brownfield workstreams and phased data migration.GE Vernova
  • Helped build BSI’s technology consulting practice as its first Consulting Manager, contributing to over £1.2M in revenue across smart-cities engagements.BSI
  • Developed and delivered the Smart City Leadership Programme for BEIS, piloted in Peterborough, using city frameworks to shape vision, digital strategy and a solutions roadmap; co-created the Cities Standards Institute with Future Cities Catapult.
  • Improved gross margin from 8% to 24% on a portfolio of council-client projects through governed change control.Swarco (formerly Dynniq)
  • Two patents awarded in vision-based measurement and automated statistical process-control data logging.
  • Two Intel Awards, for pioneering power monitoring across the test-program flow to eliminate probe-card damage, and for zero-defect test programme development on the Intel Core 2 Duo processor.Intel

Current interests

AI delivery practice

Conventional delivery methods do not transfer cleanly to AI systems: the outputs are probabilistic, quality has to be evaluated statistically rather than passed or failed, models drift after go-live, and most of the risk sits with human adoption rather than with the technology. I have been developing a delivery framework that addresses this, and I write and think about it regularly.

Climate and sustainability

I am currently studying with Terra.do on its Climate Change: Learning for Action programme. My standards and smart-cities background sits naturally alongside this, and I am interested in where data, interoperability and delivery discipline can make climate action practical rather than aspirational.

Standards and the public good

Standards work is unglamorous and disproportionately useful. I remain interested in committee, advisory and trustee work where that experience is relevant.
